Upcoming Changes to Password Requirements-Stakeholders impacted: Students, Faculty and Staff

Tags password

Dear University Stakeholders,

This email is to inform you of upcoming changes to our institution's password requirements. In the near future, we will be implementing stronger password standards to enhance the security of our systems and data.

Effective Friday, January 31st 2025, all passwords must meet the following requirements:

•    Minimum length: 12 characters
•    Character types: Must include a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters
•    Age: Passwords must be updated within the past 12 months

Please be prepared to update your password to comply with this new policy. For information on how to change your password now, check out this KnowledgeBase: https://vinu.teamdynamix.com/TDClient/69/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=21995

Password requirements are developed to ensure secure access control and mitigate risks associated with unauthorized access. These requirements are often informed by frameworks such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) guidelines, benchmark data from peer institutions, and recommendations from external penetration test findings.

Password changes at the university only affect systems that use Single Sign-On (SSO), while other systems may require separate updates to their individual passwords.  Examples of current SSO systems are VU-x, Banner, Gmail. For these systems you will only need to change your password one time, from the link on VU-x.

We will provide more details about the change and a reminder of the timeline for implementation in a follow-up communication. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to the IT Service Desk if you have any questions.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

IT Service Desk
